Bring the family to watch the primates, hoofstock, carnivores (including cats) and elephants enjoy some extra-special enrichment activities. Enrichment items papier-mâché toys, egg-shaped cereal bars, frozen treats, painted boxes, gelatin molds and, of course, hard-boiled dyed eggs. The animals absolutely eat it up! Treats and toys are prepared especially for the animals by their zookeepers. Enrichment items are often enhanced with fruit, peanut butter, popcorn, meat or other food, according to the species. Guests are encouraged to show up early to watch enrichment activities before the items are all gone.

An evening of slam poetry with ten of the top performance poets in Albuquerque competing for a spot on the 2012 ABQ Poetry Slam Team, which will represent the Duke City at the National Poetry Slam in August. ABQ Slam Teams have placed in the top five at two of the last three National Poetry Slams. ABQSlams has presented poetry slams in Albuquerque since 1995, showcasing some of the best performance poets in the SW, and winning the National Poetry Slam in 2005. Among the poets who may appear in this year’s three-round ABQ Grand Slam are renowned local performance poets Khalid Binsunni, Eva Crespin, Cuffee, Damien Flores, Zachary Kluckman, Jessica Helen Lopez, Olivia Gatwood, and Jasmine “Jazz” Sena.

5. Founders Day Fiesta
Each year thousands gather in Old Town to celebrate the birthday of Albuquerque. Honoring the first families and their ancestors, the event that fills the square, patios, courtyards and streets of Old Town pays homage to the five eras that define New Mexico history.
This year, a wide range of entertainment and activities will keep the crowds entertained while they learn about our history and those who contributed to our unique culture.

The 6th annual Southwest FunnyFest is a night of nonstop comedy featuring four of the nation’s top female comediennes. Featuring Dana Goldberg, Jessica Kirson, Shawn Pelofsky, and Fortune Feimster. This show is not recommended for children under the age of 16.
